Falcons, Patriots earn WRC cross country titles

DANVILLE — The Schlarman Hilltoppers claimed an outright Vermilion Valley Conference soccer title on Thursday night with a 4-2 win over Georgetown-Ridge Farm.

Schlarman (14-4-2 overall, 7-1 in the VVC) earned the outright title with the victory and the Hilltoppers were also credited with another win over Hoopeston Area/Bismarck-Henning, because of the fact that the Cornjerkers used an ineligible player in their contest last Thursday.

“We’ve very happy to have won this conference title,’’ Schlarman coach Ed Barney said.

Weston DePratt and Refugio Guerrero each scored a pair of goals for the Hilltoppers, while Guererro also had an assist.

claim WRC titles

ATTICA, Ind. — The North Vermillion Falcons boys cross country team and the Seeger Patriots girls cross country team earned WRC titles at Ravine Park on Thursday.

Austin Shell, who finished second, and Ed Moore, who finished fifth, led the Falcons to the title.

Fountain Central was second as Mark Beight won the individual honors with a time of 17 minutes, 58 seconds.

In the girls race, Anna McGowen not only won the individual competition, but she also helped the Patriots to the team title. Anastasia Kennedy was fourth for Seeger.

Fountain Central was second as Carolyn Trueblood and Mackenzie Sheldon were second and third respectively for the Mustangs.

in PBL invitational

PAXTON — Zach Alvey finished seventh to lead the Comets to a second place finish behind Shelbyville.

Alvey finished the 3-mile course in 17:56, while teammate Elliott Leighton (17:57) was right behind him in eighth.

In the girls race, Hoopeston Area’s Belinda Cohen won individual honors with a time of 19:25 and she helped the Cornjerkers place fourth.

ARMSTRONG — April Cahill had five aces and 14 service points to lead the Hilltoppers past the Trojans, 25-17, 25-20.

Schlarman, which improved to 15-4 overall and 7-2 in the VVC, also got a team-high three kills from Sarah Bennett, six assists from Emily Schiro and 10 digs from Serena Calhoun.

Leading the way for Armstrong-Potomac (9-11, 5-5) was Kara Carter with five kills adn three blocks.

BISMARCK — The Blue Devils are still undefeated in Vermilion Valley Conference action after Thursday’s 25-14, 25-11 win over the Cornjerkers.

Hannah Ohl had seven kills and seven assists for Bismarck-Henning, while Cassie McCorkle added four kills and three blocks.

Another key performer for the Blue Devils (14-2, 9-0) was Kristen Tuggle with six kills and five digs.

CATLIN — The Storm had four different players lead them with six kills in the 25-5, 25-6 win over the Buffaloes.

Leading Salt Fork in kills were Kristen Cox, Hannah Wilkins, Mallory Meade and Mallory Weber.

Additionally, Cox, Wilkins and Meade combined for 11 blocks and Maddy Stutsman contributed 19 assists.

CHRISMAN — Jade Beals had a team-high 20 assists to lead the Cardinals past the Comets 25-13, 25-13.

Chrisman (15-4, 7-2) were led in kills by Brooke Wolfe with seven and Shelby Porter had three blocks.

MILFORD — Emma Boyd had four kills and four blocks in a losing cause as the Tigers beat Bearcats, 25-23, 25-22.

Milford’s Colleen Quigley had 13 service points, including 10 straight in the second game as the Bearcats’ rally fell short.

CAYUGA, Ind. — Jessica Astin and Courtney DeVerter combined for 22 kills as the Falcons defeated the Red Ramblers, 25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-8 in a Wabash River Conference contest.

Astin also contributed three service aces and 21 digs, while DeVerter led North Vermillion (5-16, 2-4) with 38 digs.

Another key performer for the Falcons was Shelby Lewis with four blocks, four aces and 23 digs.

COLLEGE SOCCER

DANVILLE — The Jaguars and keeper Josh Hetzel posted a shutout against the Bulldogs.

Hetzel faced on five shots as Scott Hardy quarterbacked the DACC defense, according to coach Dave Barney.

Alvaro Guijarro scored both goals for the Jaguars (7-7-1).
