ROUNDUP: Ford wins Big 12 title

Cleveland breaks DHS freshman record

STAFF REPORT

MATTOON Danville scored 43 points in the Big 12 Conference Meet at Mattoon, taking sixth place out of 10 teams and scoring more points then they have the last three years at the meet.

Sophomore Cameron Stringfellow-Ford is now the conference champion in the discus with a throw of 140 feet 10 inches.

Freshman Matt Cleveland broke the 26-year-old Danville High School freshman record in the mile with a time of 4:40.09, good enough for second place.

Sophomore Mitchell Killough placed second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:09.02 and junior Joselin Viljevac took third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:45.47.

“We did really well with the large number of sophomores and juniors we have,” Danville coach Steve Luke said. “We won the freshman/sophomore meet this year and we will have everyone back next year. Our only conference champ was a sophomore.”

Up next for the Vikings is the Class AA sectional meet on May 16 in Champaign.

PREP SOFTBALL

Hoopeston Area 7-17

Donovan 1-0

DONOVAN — Erin Henk and Katelin Sheppard combined for eight hits, two doubles, one triple and five RBIs in the non-conference doubleheader at Donovan.

Kelsey Sollars and Amy Austin had two hits each game and a whole slew of Lady Cornjerkers had multiple hits in the second game.

Henk (17-4) was the winning pitcher in game one and Sollars (3-2) got the win in game two.

“We had two outstanding pitching efforts. They allowed only one hit in each game. Henk had 10 strike outs while Sollars had eight,” Hoopeston Area coach John Hardcastle said.

The Cornjerkers improve to 20-6 and travel to Paxton for two games on Saturday. Hoopeston Area will play Peotone in one game and Paxton-Buckley-Loda in the other.
