Cornjerkers beat Tigers in VVC softball

MILFORD — Oakwood senior Brady Leeman picked up his sixth win of the season as the Comets defeated the Milford Bearcats 4-1 on Thursday in a Vermilion Valley Conference baseball game.

Leeman (6-1) allowed just one run on four hits as he walked one batter and struck out six.

“It was Brady being Brady today,’’ Oakwood coach Bob Sermak said. “He struggled a little bit with the mound, but he battled through it.’’

The Comets (17-7 overall, 8-4 in the VVC) built a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Mitch Pouillard in the third and a sacrifice fly from Casey Fletcher in the fifth.

Pouillard and Fletcher were a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs, while Leeman helped his own cause with a run-scoring hit in the seventh.

Milford’s Kristopher Evans, who took the loss, drove home his team’s only run while Kyle Evans had two of the Bearcats four hits.

Danville 6

Mattoon 6

MATTOON — Vikings coach Gary Gritton is starting to think that he is coaching a hockey team rather than a baseball team.

For the third time this season, Danville had a game end in a tie as the Vikings’ game with the Mattoon Green Wave was suspended and eventually called because of lighting with the two teams tied at 6-6 in the 10th inning.

“We really battled today, but unfortunately the story of our season (the weather) got the best of us again,’’ said Gritton, whose team has runners on first and third with one out in the 10th.

Gritton added that the tie also spoiled a great performance by Cody Burton, who allowed just one run in 6– innings of relief.

Offensively, Chadd Snyder and Zack Thomas each collected three hits for the Vikings (9-8-3 overall, 4-3-1 in the Big 12).

Up next for Danville is a doubleheader on Saturday at Decatur MacArthur.

Salt Fork 5

Hoopeston 5

HOOPESTON — Brad Collins’ RBI single in the seventh forced extra innings between the Storm and Cornjerkers.

Salt Fork and Hoopeston Area was still tied 5-5 in the ninth when thunderstorms forced the game to be suspended.

The Cornjerkers overcame a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead on a Clayton Snyder single in the fifth.

The game will be completed at a later date. Hoopeston Area coach Josh Haley said that wouldn’t be decided until today.

Westville 2

HOOPESTON — Four straight run-scoring singles in the fourth inning was more than enough to lead the Cornjerkers past the Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader.

Alexsis Grove, Lacey Simpson, Kelsey Sollars and Katlyn Goodrun had the key hits in the fourth for Hoopeston Area, which improves to 16-3 overall and 8-2 in the Vermilion Valley.

The Cornjerkers added four insurance runs in the sixth as Valerie Austin cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

Kayla Bryant and Taylor Ceader each finished with two hits for the Tigers, who are now 11-8 and 9-3.

The second game of the twinbill was suspended with Westville leading Hoopeston Area 5-3 in the third inning. The two teams will finish the game today at Westville, starting at 3 p.m.

BISMARCK — Frankie Shoaf tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Blue Devils past the Comets.

Shoaf also contributed at the plate as she had a double, a triple and three RBIs for Bismarck-Henning, which improves to 9-12 overall and 6-5 in the Vermilion Valley.

Danielle Brown and Kimi Setser got things started for the Blue Devils with two-out RBI-singles in the fourth inning.

Oakwood falls to 6-17 overall and 2-8 in the VVC.

CATLIN — Mallory Weber went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and two RBIs in the Storm’s win over the Trojans.

Earning the victory for Salt Fork was Hunter Marsh, it was her first of the season.

Brittany Moreland, who took the loss for Armstrong-Potomac, had her team’s only RBI.

The Storm improves to 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the Vermilion Valley with the win.

MILFORD — Ashley McKay had a double, a home run and three RBIs but it wasn’t enough as the Bearcats fell to the Wildcats in a non-conference contest.

Milford, which drops to 7-9, also got two hits and two RBIs from Whitney Waterman, while Kylie Scherf also had an RBI.

Aaron White had the low round for the Trojans with a 38, while Jacob Turner led the Falcons with a 45.

ATTICA, Ind. — Kelcey Gillum pulled out a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to help the Patriots sweep the Red Ramblers.

Gillum rallied after dropping the first set to beat Attica’s Jessica Holtkamp 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Ashley White and River Lane got victories at No. 1 and 2 singles while the No. 1 doubles team of Chloe Thurman and Hannah Akers dropped just one game in the straight-sets victory.

Seeger is now 9-1 on the season.

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats as Amy Brown pulled out a three-set victory at No. 3 singles.

South Vermillion won at No. 1 and 2 singles, while Fountain Central earned both matches in doubles, setting up Brown in the deciding match.

After splitting the first two sets, Brown pulled out a 6-0 win in the third set for the victory as the Mustangs improve to 3-6 on the season.

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Athenians pulled out a pair of three-set victories to claim a sweep over the Trojans.

Covington’s Ashleigh Sorrell lost a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 match to Ariel Demoret at No. 1 singles and the Trojans doubles team of Kenzie Rainey and Amanda Brooks dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 match to Megan Leech and Hillary Sheets.

The Trojans are 5-2 on the season.

Crenshaw wins three events at PBL Invite

PAXTON — Schlarman’s Solomon Crenshaw won the 100-meter, the 200-meter and the long jump events at the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Invitational.

His three first-place finishes helped the Hilltoppers finish sixth in the team standings.

Additionally, Mallory Lampkin from Schlarman was second in the long jump and second in the triple jump.

Hoopeston Area was 10th in the 13-team meet as Brock Ramos won the 800.

Bismarck-Henning, which finished 11th, got a fourth-place finish from Ian Park in the 110 hurdles and a fourth from Hugo Sanchez in the triple jump.

Falcons finish second behind Wildcats

CAYUGA, Ind. — Quentin Bemis won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdle events to help North Vermillion take second in a five-team meet held at North Vermillion.

South Vermillion scored 117 points to take the title.

Zack Messick was first in the 100, second in the 200 and ran a leg on Covington’s winning 400 relay, helping the Trojans finish third.

Attica, which was fourth, got a pair of first-place finishes from Michael Mattern in the 800 and the discus events.

Harmon helps

Covington take second

CAYUGA, Ind. — Lacey Harmon won three events as the Trojans finished 35 points behind the South Vermillion Wildcats.

Harmon won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as running a leg on Covington’s winning 400 relay team.

Brittany Capps (100 hurdles) and Anna Broadwater (long jump) each won events for Attica, which finished in a tie for third with Riverton Parke.

North Vermillion, which finished fifth, got a second-place finish from junior Hillary Lively in the high jump.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

DACC 2-4

DANVILLE — Pitchers Donovan Drake and Taylor Dennis combined for 20 strikeouts as the Jaguars swept the Lynx in a Mid-West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Former Danville standout Ty Montgomery provided the game-winning, walk-off double in the opener for DACC (22-19 overall, 15-13 in the MWAC) and the first baseman drove home two in the nightcap.

Sophomore outfielder Tony Zubia was the other offensive star for the Jaguars with three RBIs in the twinbill, including a two-hit, two-RBI performance in the second game.

DACC and Lincoln will complete the three-game series today in Lincoln. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

DACC 6

Springfield 2

MATTOON — The Lady Jaguars won their opening game of the Region 24 Tournament, but they also suffered a big loss in the process.

Danville Area Community College scored five times in the fifth to pull out a 6-2 win over Springfield College, but the Lady Jaguars lost Brittney Ault for the season with a shoulder injury.

Ault was scheduled to pitch against Illinois Central in the second game, which has been suspended, tied 0-0 in the third, until today.

“That was a tough blow, but the girls are showing a lot of heart,’’ DACC coach Jimmie Evans said. “We’ve got some momentum from the win over Springfield. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling against ICC (today).’’

Former Armstrong-Potomac standout Bailey Herron got the offense started for DACC (16-27) in the game against Springfield with a two-run single. That was followed by a run-scoring triple from Kayla Nixon (Schlarman), a RBI single from Kendra Gallion (Westville) and capped by run-scoring him from Taryn Nohmer (Danville).

Jordan Millspaugh got the win as she allowed just two runs on seven hits, while walking none and striking out one.
