Parks a place for learning and fun

Commercial-News

Vermilion County’s many parks and recreation areas provide plenty of opportunities for area residents to enjoy activities and serve as an attraction for visitors from across the state.

The parks administered by the Vermilion County Conservation District also offer grade-school students a chance to learn more about the outdoors.

Children in kindergarten through the fifth grade can participate in two upcoming programs, Young Explorers and Pioneer Kids at Forest Glen Preserve located about 7 miles east of Westville.

Pioneer Kids is open to those who have completed the first through fifth grades. Participants will learn skills at Forest Glen’s Pioneer Cabin from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 16. Cost is $25.

Young Explorers is open to children who have completed kindergarten up through those who have finished the fifth grade. Sessions run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 23 and cost $30.

Participants also can experience hikes, crafts and games.

Registration forms are available at the Kennekuk Park Visitor Center or Forest Glen Staff Office. Parents can call 662-2142 during business hours to check whether the camps are full.

Conservation district personnel do a great job not only in putting together and conducting a series of educational programs for children during the summer, but also of maintaining the parks and sponsoring special events for visitors of all ages.

Few other counties the size of Vermilion can boast of such a strong conservation district. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy its programs.
