Charles "Gene" E. Wernigk

Charles “Gene” E. Wernigk, 81, of Potomac, passed away at 6:08 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at his home.

Gene was born on Sept. 4, 1932, in Collison, the son of Charles Everett and Laura Mae (Dyer) Wernigk.

He married Shirley Stewart on Feb. 26, 1956, in Potomac. She preceded him in death Nov. 12, 2011.

He is survived by four daughters, Billie (Carl) Crews of Rossville, Donna (Armando) Colunga of Potomac, Lisa (Brian) Pickett of Potomac and Patty (Randy) Ford of Georgetown; one son, Dan (Cindy) Wernigk of Urbana; four brothers, Robert Wernigk of Danville, Ron (Mary) Wernigk of Danville, Don (Cherie) Wernigk of Jamesburg, and Carroll (Carolyn) Wernigk of Tilton; three sisters, Margaret Ann Cunningham of Florida, Martha (Tony) Fadda of Florida, and Jan Smith of Potomac; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter, Heather Crews; and two grandsons, Stephen Crews and Paul Colunga.

Gene worked at H.F. Cope Grain Elevator in Potomac for several years and later was Middlefork Township Road Commissioner for 16 years, until he retired in 2002. Gene served on the Bluegrass Fire Department for 25 years.

He was a member of the Potomac Church of Christ, where he served as a Deacon several years ago. He also was a member of the Potomac Lion’s Club. Gene enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, hunting, gardening, playing euchre, spending time with his dog, Sissy, and helping others.

He also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene adored his wife, Shirley, and she was his life.

A Celebration of the Life of Charles “Gene” Wernigk will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Wolfe-Blurton Funeral Home in Potomac, with Pastor Randy Holden officiating. Burial will follow in Partlow Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in Gene’s name to the American Cancer Society. The family has entrusted the Wolfe-Blurton Funeral Home in Potomac to assist them in honoring Gene’s life. Condolences or photos may be shared on Gene’s tribute page at:
