---- — DANVILLE — James Franklin Black Sr., 77, of Danville, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at the VA Illiana Health Care Systems in Danville.

James was born Oct. 5, 1936, in Herrick, Ill., the son of William and Alma (Weaver) Black.

He married Peggy Scipio on Nov. 27, 1988, in Taylorville at the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Jim is survived by his wife, Peggy Black; four sons, Robert, Timothy, James Jr., and Glenn Black; one daughter, Melissa Black Hall; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Marilyn (Black) Malmberg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Jim retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 years of service. He retired with the rank E-7, Chief, and his active duty included nine tours in Vietnam. Jim received the Purple Heart for being injured on active duty and also received the Silver Cross for his great leadership during an attack on his ship.

His hobbies included scratch-building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. He was a member of the Vermillion County RC Club. He also enjoyed working on anything mechanical. He built and raced stock cars at the Assumption Raceway, Assumption, Ill. He enjoyed riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, especially on vacations.

A visitation for James Black will be 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville. Burial and graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Danville National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 210.
