Lawrence 'Larry' Seal

OAKWOOD — Lawrence “Larry” Seal, 91, of Oakwood, passed away at 5:10 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at his home.

Larry was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Bloomington, to Frederick I. and Lillian B. Spencer Seal.

He married Sara Suzanne Wilson in May 1951 in Covington, Ind. He later married Helen Tynes Thomas in October 1971 in Chicago. She preceded him in death in January 2005.

Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Jeffrey Seal of Danville and John Gregory Seal of Danville; two daughters, Suzan Renee (Michael) Engelmann of Oakwood and Rebecca Lei (Kenny Farmer) Lawrence of Momence; one sister, Bessie L. Hummer of Danville; five grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn (John) Martin, John Christopher Seal, Jason Michael Nelson, Justin Lawrence, and Johnathon (Jenna) Engelmann; six great-grandchildren, Victoria, Nicholas and Patrick Martin, Kody Lawrence, Dyllan Engelmann, and Jaylin Seal; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William J. Seal and Russell J. Seal, and one sister, Ruth I. Johnson.

Larry graduated in 1940 from Covington High School, Covington, Ind. He worked on the farm and at Harrison Steel Foundry before joining the Marine Corps on May 29, 1942. He served one enlistment of four years, serving in the 4th Marine Division as a tank crew member. He served in the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian in the Mariana Islands, and Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands … making all four of the landings. He earned the Bronze Star medal with Combat “V,” Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct medal, American Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with three Bronze Stars, World War II Victory medal, Rifle Marksman badge and Pistol Marksman badge.

Back stateside, he had a 30-day leave and finished the enlistment doing guard duty at the Navy Disciplinary Unit at Camp Perry, Va. He was discharged there with an Honorable Discharge on May 28, 1946.

He was a hoist repairman for Duff Norton Company, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed woodworking, yard work and going out to eat. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Danville. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Robison Chapel, Catlin, with Pastor Kent Tibben officiating. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Oakwood, with military honors accorded by the Davis Busby Catlin American Legion Post 776. Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Robison Chapel, Catlin.
