Gone fishin! Hazel Morgan, 83, of Danville, passed away at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at her residence.
A coal miner’s daughter, she was born on July 6, 1929, in Dora, Ala., the daughter of Lewis Beason and Lura Otillia (Campbell) Leighton.
She married Joseph Weathers in 1946, then later married Sonny Morgan and shared a lifelong partnership with Charlie Devylder, all preceding her in death.
Surviving her are two sons, Joseph (Kathy) Weathers of Danville and Michael (Wendy) Weathers of Syracuse, Utah; one daughter, Lura Rose of Danville; one brother, Lewis Beason “LB” Leighton of Dora, Ala.; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; lifelong companion; two daughters, Sharron E. Stibbs and Gwendolyn Marie Powell Weathers; two brothers, Kenneth Leighton, Dugan (Imogene) Phillips; and one grandson, Greg Powell.
She was a dance instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studio, a lifelong member of the United Autoworkers Union, Fairview Sportsman’s Club, an avid fisherman, mushroom hunter and gun operator. She was the first female Healy Arc Welder at Bohn Aluminum in Hammond, Ind., before transferring to Danville in 1956. She worked there for 38 years before retiring.
In her final days she was blessed to have her family by her side. Her sons and daughter provided her with peace and comfort. In her final moments, her daughter held her hand as she made her journey to heaven to be reunited with those loved ones who passed before her. She is now celebrating the reunion with her dearly loved daughters Sharron and Gwen. Hazel is most likely fishing on the banks of heaven with Charlie again. To many, Hazel was always known as “Stormy” Weathers and by her grandson Robbie as “Goon-Goon.”
A celebration of life graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Spring Hill Cemetery in Danville. Cremation rites have been accorded with Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville.
Memorials can be made in Hazel’s name to C.A.R.A. Animal Shelter in Tilton.
