CATLIN — Berton Luther Field, 84, went to be with his Lord on May 6, 2013. His family was by his side at his home in Catlin.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1929. He was the son of Berton and Jeanette Field of Springfield.

He married Virginia Arlene Tutt on March 12, 1950, in Springfield.

His career path became computer programming, beginning with key-punch cards. His family benefited from his computer passion by owning the latest computer models, including a TI-99 and the Apple IIe. After working in the field for over 40 years, he retired from Hyster in Danville in 1991.

Next to his family, music was his life. He studied percussion instruments, starting in grade school. He also studied piano for 12 years and the organ for three years. At the Catlin Church of Christ, his nickname was “Golden-fingers” since he played the organ and piano regularly and blessed the congregation with specials on the vibraharp and marimba. His favorite specials included playing “four-handed” piano with other church pianists.

Survivors include his son, Timothy (Karol) Field of Loganville, Ga.; and his daughters, Carolyn (Richard) Juvinall of Oakwood and Barbara (Jeffery) Lewis of Catlin. Grandchildren include Timothy (Catherine) Field of Danville, Troy (Tara) Field of Greenwood, Ind., Jamie (Cameron) Estes of Indianapolis, Nicole (Robert) Miller of Danville and Leslie (Robert) Owensby of St. Peters, Mo. Great-grandchildren include Alexander and Erin Field, Elizabeth and Carson Estes, Amelia Field, Jillian and Kennedi Miller and Aubrey Owensby.

Other surviving relatives include his sisters-in-law, Reta (William) Kuhns of Bluffs, Shirley (Lawrence) Puckett of Georgetown, Patsy Tutt of Springfield and Sharon Williams of Springfield; and brother-in-law, Charles Gooden of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law Roy Tutt Jr.; and sister-in-law Eloise Gooden.

Funeral services: 10 a.m. Friday at Catlin Church of Christ, Darren Johnson and Brian Durbin officiating. Burial in: OakRidge Cemetery, Catlin. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Catlin Church of Christ. Robison Chapel in Catlin is in charge of the arrangements.
