George never met a stranger. He was a candidly honest straight shooter but had a soft side and gave of himself without reluctance, hesitation or expectation. He had an easy smile and a quick, ornery wit. He was an avid NASCAR racing fan, rooting for Dale Earnhardt and against Jeff Gordon. He enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends, camping with Donna and their grandchildren at their site at the Charlarose Lake and Campground near Waynetown, Ind., traveling on cruise vacations with his children, fishing with his grandsons, visiting his granddaughters in Arizona, watching Illini basketball with Donna and Notre Dame football with his grandchildren, and slowly cruising Catlin in the 1978 Corvette he and Bob lovingly restored.
Funeral service: 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Robison Chapel, Catlin, with Pastor Dave Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery, Catlin. The family will greet friends and relatives for visitation from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, with Masonic services at 1:30 p.m. at Robison Chapel.
The family extends a special “thank you” to the staffs at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center and the Hawthorne Inn, who relieved George’s pain, respected his dignity and showed him many kindnesses during his final illnesses.
The family requests any memorial donations be made to either the Catlin Fire Protection District Rescue Unit or Catlin American Legion Post 776.
