Charles Beiger

CHAMPAIGN —Charles (Chuck) Henry Beiger Jr., 85, of Champaign, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Presence Covenant Hospital in Urbana.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1928, in Ludington, Mich., the son of Charles Henry and Emma Jane (Hitchner) Beiger Sr.

He married Mary Helen “Midge” Smith on Aug. 20, 1949, in Oak Park. They spent 64 wonderful years together, and she survives.

He will be deeply missed by his wife; two daughters, Sheryl Walsh of Danville and Claudia Satterthwaite of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; two sons-in-law, Jack Walsh and Mark Satterthwaite; one sister, Jane Weber of Elmhurst; five grandchildren, Heather (Junior) Vargas of Danville, Brad (Trish) Walsh of Princeton, Texas, Greg Walsh of Champaign, Alex Satterthwaite of Champaign and Alexis Satterthwaite of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Haylee, Brandon, Lance and Madison; and many nieces and nephews.

Chuck was an illustrator of textbooks at the University of Illinois for many years and then went on to be an engineer at Kraft Foods in Champaign until his retirement. He loved playing guitar and taught lessons on guitar, banjo and bass guitar. He enjoyed traveling, including internationally with Midge and his family and stopping to play golf at every opportunity when they went on vacation. They also went camping, fishing and canoeing. Chuck built and flew model airplanes; at one time he had two on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Champaign-Urbana Barbershop Chorus, singing for more than 30 years in the chorus and various quartets. He also enjoyed playing bridge.

He will be laid to rest at the Memorial Circle at Turtle Run Golf Course in Danville, with a memorial service pending for sometime during the last week of March.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Champaign, where Chuck and Midge attended for many years. Please join Chuck’s family in sharing photos, videos and memories of him through his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
