Ivan G. Reed, 89, of Georgetown, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System, Danville.
He was born in Cisne, the youngest son of Armor and Irene Reed.
Ivan was preceded in death by brothers, Walton Reed and Marion Reed, and his parents.
Ivan and Emy Lou Mahoney were married after graduating from Sidell High School. They moved to Georgetown in 1944 and have resided there since.
The call to military service took Ivan to Fort Knox, Ky., in the tank corps. He was transferred to Monterey, Calif., to train in amphibious tanks to invade Japan. Luckily, Japan surrendered and they were sent all over the South Pacific to replace those who had been fighting there. The last place was Iwo Jima and then discharge and home to his family.
Ivan enrolled in Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and graduated from there to begin his life working with electricity.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Emy Lou; daughter, Betty (James) Lomax of Catlin; sons, Charles “C.I.” (Linda) Reed of Danville, John (Mary Jo) Reed of Georgetown and James “Mike” (Jory) Reed of Newport, Ind.; five grandchildren;15 great-grandchildren; and many relatives in southern Illinois.
Ivan was an active community person — Lions Club, Georgetown Fair, American Legion Post 203 (18th District Commander, 40 & 8 of the Legion) and the many people he donated his electrical expertise to.
According to his wishes, he will be cremated. Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Indianola, with Pastor Gary Farris officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 203, Georgetown, and Post 51, Westville.
