John William Copas

DANVILLE — John William Copas, 87, of Grape Creek, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Vermilion Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Danville to David and Lueree Taylor Copas.

John married Jacqueline “Jackie” Spicer, who survives. He and Jackie started dating April 1, 1946, and were married Aug. 4, 1946. They have been married 67 years.

He is survived by three children, David (Linda) Copas of Monticello, Ind., Kate (Lou) Hablas of Tilton, Sam (Lori) Copas of Decatur; a daughter-in-law, Judy Copas of Brookston, Ind.; and a sister, Rhonda Huff. John is survived by 16 grandchildren, Molly (Randy) Shedlock, Becky (Walter) Chitty, J.C. (Amy) Copas, Chad O’Leary, April (Matt) Brown, Tawnya Morgan, Corey (Michelle) Terrell, Dennis, Dwayne, Abigail Terrell, Bill Paddock and Justin Copas and several step-grandchildren. He is survived by 21 great-grandchildren, Levi and Jacqui Chitty, Jake and Max Copas, Katie and Lillie Brown, Michael (Dawn), Joseph and Regina Terrell, Bailee, McKenzie, Abigail and Cori Terrell, Brittany, Amber and Rodney Paddock and several step-great-grandchildren. John has four great-great-grandchildren, Kiera, Kamyron, William and Dominick Paddock; and several step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Rnthym Copas; a sister, Margie Larson; and a daughter, Connie (Everett) Terrell; one grandson, Joe Morgan; and one great-great-granddaughter, Maisy Morgan.

John worked at Muesbeck Shoe Company before going into the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II in the Philippine Islands, Guam and Korea. Upon returning home, he went to work at Earl Gastoff’s and later retired from R&S Printing.

John has been a member of Grape Creek Baptist Church since early childhood, serving as a deacon for many years. He also was a Baptist Camp Assurance Trustee. John also served as a school board member of Grape Creek Valley Grade School being the last living member since the school closed.

John liked to bowl, read and was an avid walker of four or five miles a day. He loved for the family to come home to visit and take vacations to Amarillo, Texas, for family reunions.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Grape Creek Baptist Church, 13658 Grape Creek Road, Danville, Pastor David Leary officiating. Burial in: the National Cemetery in Danville, with military honors by Westville American Legion. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Grape Creek Baptist Church. Robison Chapel of Catlin is handling arrangements.
