Edgar Lovelace

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Edgar Lovelace was born and raised in Evansville, Ind., to George Frank and Maggie Lovelace on Dec. 23, 1932. He was the youngest of four siblings.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in Evansville in 1950. He attended the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff before entering the United States Air Force and serving in the Korean War.

After the Korean War, he attended the University of Evansville, where he played football and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy.

Upon graduation, he went to work for the Veterans Administration (VA) as a physical therapist. While with the VA, he moved to Canandaigua, N.Y., Cleveland, Ohio, Marion, Ind., and finally to Danville, Ill.

While in Danville, he met and married Nancy Hannon (Iruka) who had four wonderful children, JoAnda, Duwayne, Benjamin and Cammille. They loved children so much that they had three more sons, Dale, Clifton and Mark.

In 1988 he was re-married to his wonderful wife, Evelyn (Magno) Lovelace. They soon became the adoptive parents of two children, Angel and Donald. Together they raised these two children and loved them very much.

Edgar Lovelace accepted Christ at an early age and has been a lifelong member of Nazarene Baptist Church in Evansville, Ind. From 1975 until 1987, he was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Danville. In 1987, he became a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Danville until he was called home.

He was a member of the Prince Hall Masons, active member of his church, a devoted husband, tireless father, beloved brother, understanding uncle and, most of all, a fierce advocate for education.

Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, George Frank and Maggie; his sister, Alberta Anderson; and his brother, Clifton Lovelace.

He leaves to cherish his memory his oldest sister, Margaret Lee of Evansville, Ind.; his devoted wife of 25 years, Evelyn of Danville; son Dale (Tonya) Lovelace of Kansas City, Mo.; son Clifton (Carmen) Lovelace of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; son Mark (Sonya) Lovelace of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Angel Lovelace of Champaign; and son Donald Lovelace of Danville. He also leaves a stepdaughter, Chyrelle Magno; and three stepsons, Clifford (Angie) Magno, Antonio Magno (Criseliz) and Constantine Magno; 24 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Edgar will have two home-going celebrations: noon Friday, June 7, at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Danville, with visitation from 10 a.m. until noon; and Saturday, June 8, at Masons Funeral Home in Evansville, Ind., with visitation from 9 a.m. EDT until service. He will be laid to rest next to his mother, sister, brother and cousins at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Ind.

Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville, is in charge of arrangements.
