CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. —
Mr. Walter R. Barnes, 78, Crawfordsville, Ind., passed away at 9:20 p.m. EDT Saturday, June 22, 2013, in Franciscan St. Elizabeth Crawfordsville Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1934, in Danville, Ill., to John S. and Harriet (Krauel) Barnes.
He married Sandra Barnes in August 1970 in New Ross, Ind. She survives.
Mr. Barnes worked in the Tool & Die Department at Sommer Metalcraft for 25 years, retiring in 2009. He also had worked at Bohn Aluminum, Danville.
He was a graduate of Catlin High School, served in the Army, Navy and National Guard, loved to fish, golf, cook out and be with his family.
In addition to his wife of Crawfordsville, he is survived by his children, Brenda (David) Barnes Taylor of Indianapolis, Becky Barnes Porter of Danville, Ind., Don (Kristine) Barnes of Thorntown, Ind., and John Barnes (fiancé, Cathy Brown) of Westerville, Ohio. Also surviving are his brother, Gene (Evelyn) Barnes, Tilton; sisters, Maryann (Maynard) Laub of Neponset and Judy (Tom) Jennings, Catlin; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Randy A.; daughter Toni Barnes; and nine brothers.
Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m. EDT Tuesday, June 25, at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, Crawfordsville. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Friends may call from 2 p.m. EDT until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home by Crawfordsville American Legion and VFW posts on Tuesday prior to the funeral.
