VEEDERSBURG, Ind. —
Velmar E. Howard, 82, of rural Veedersburg, Ind., went to be with our Lord at 2 p.m. EST Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Ben Hur Nursing Home in Crawfordsville, Ind.
He was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Veedersburg, Ind., the son of Walter C. and Mamie Catherine Howard. Velmar married Sylvia Johnson June 12, 1959, in Troy, Ohio.
Surviving family include his wife, Sylvia Howard, Veedersburg; two sons, Rick Lee Howard of Kentucky and Todd Lavon Howard of Minnesota; a daughter, Trina Jo (Paul) Collins of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Ron (Carolyn) Howard of Covington, Ind.; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by three brothers, Gordon Howard, Orris Howard and Othel Howard; and two sisters, Ura Brett and Emogene Kinney.
Velmar graduated from Covington High School in 1948. He graduated from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. Velmar was employed as an electrical engineer for Delco in Dayton, Ohio, for four years and for 26 years at Hurleton in Danville, Ill. He enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge and euchre and spending time with his family. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Covington.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. EST Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at United Methodist Church in Covington with Pastor Tom Hunter and Andy Martin officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. EST Saturday at the church and continue until the time of service. Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington with military honors provided by American Legion Post #288.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorial contributions be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
