John L. Smith, 78, of Danville, passed away at 12:24 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.
John was born on Aug. 20, 1934 in Danville, to Leo and Mary Connelly Smith. Survivors include sister, Norma Williamson of Danville; one nephew, Bob (Chris) Williamson of Danville; two nieces, Theresa (Gary) Liggett and Mary K. (Donnie) Boyd both of Westville; four great-nephews, Rob (Sherri) Williamson, Paul Williamson, Mike (Angie) Williamson and Brian Liggett; and three great nieces, Heather (Joe) Sabalaskey, Michelle Liggett and Jennifer Boyd.
John served in the United States Army, and had been housekeeping Supervisor at the Danville Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System for many years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westville and the Alter & Rosary Society. He served on the Board of Resurrection Cemetery in Danville. He was an avid White Sox fan. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, spending time with the family at the lake and voicing his opinion.
As an animal lover, John willingly shared responsibility with his sister for the care of her cat, Come-On.
For many years John served his parish, St. Mary's Church in Westville, as an usher.
Above all else, John was very devoted to his family. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews and especially by his sister, Norma.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westville, with Father Timothy Sauppe to officiate. Burial with military honors at Resurrection Cemetery in Danville. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Monday at Robison Chapel in Catlin, with Rosary at 4 p.m.
