Dr. William Gordon DeWitt Henderson

ATLANTA, Ga. — Dr. William Gordon DeWitt Henderson, former Danville resident, was born in Hartsville, S.C., on March 23, 1919, to Jacob D. and Margaret B. Henderson.

He passed over into eternity on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

Dr. Henderson was married to Gwendolyn Dowdell Henderson on Aug. 24, 1949.

From this marriage of 64 years they raised three loving children. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher and friend who put his family and fellow man first.

He was a faithful Sunday school teacher at both Allen Chapel A.M.E., Danville, Ill., and New Life Presbyterian, Atlanta, Ga. He held numerous professional positions related to his work and also was involved in many civic organizations and causes for which he received many honors and awards.

Dr. Henderson began his dental practice in 1957. He was the first black dentist to become president of the Danville District Dental Society. Dr. Henderson was a very civic-minded person and dedicated a lot of his time fighting for the betterment of his community.

Dr. Henderson leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving wife, Gwendolyn (Dowdell) Henderson; three children, William Jr. Henderson (Shelia), Doris Henderson and Cynthia Henderson Norrington; seven grandchildren, Minka Joseph (Nigel), Ryan Stephens (Herbert), Trishaun Goodman (Curtis), Tia Norrington, Daten Henderson, William Henderson III and Jamari Norrington; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Holcombe, Christopher Goodman, Jaiden Henderson, Ashley Montgomery and Tajhe Montgomery; and one great-great-grandchild, Ashtyn St. Anthony, all of Atlanta, Ga. Also, left to cherish his memory is the wife of his late brother Homer Henderson, Tennie Henderson; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Pettis. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other longtime friends and coworkers will never forget his willingness to always be there in a time of need and his dedication to his life’s work.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, a sister and two grandchildren.

Celebration of life services for Dr. Henderson will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at New Life Presbyterian Church, 6600 Old National Highway, Atlanta, Ga. A wake will be held Friday, May 10, at Murray Brothers Funeral Home, Atlanta, Ga.
