Minister Ida Mae (Boyd) Reed

DANVILLE — Minister Ida Mae (Boyd) Reed, 74, of Danville, passed this life at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 at North Logan Healthcare Center.

Born June 27, 1939, in Coldwater, Miss, she was the daughter of the late John Boyd and Lucille Clark. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and joined New Garden Baptist Church in Coldwater. She attended the local school system and graduated from Walker High School.

She was united in marriage to her longtime friend, the Rev. Herman Lee “Son” Reed, on June 28, 1958. He survives in Danville.

Other survivors include one daughter, Machelle Easley (Mike) of Pensacola, Fla.; six sons, Clifton (Penny) and Darryl (Monica) of Danville, Anthony of Chicago, Keitrick (Chandra) of Atlanta, Ga., DeRicco (Whitney) of El Paso, Ill., and DeRocco (Janel) of Normal; one step-daughter, Darlene Walls of Frazier, Tenn.; two brothers, John (Lillie Bell) of Coldwater and the Rev. Major Boyd (Stella) of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other step-grandchildren; five brothers-in-law and 11 sisters-in-laws; two special co-workers in Christ, Mrs. Ivadale Foster and Mrs. Owen Lee Nelson; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.

She was a loving mother and homemaker. Her tireless efforts as a homemaker made it possible for her husband, Pastor Herman Lee Reed, to go about the Lord’s work while traveling as an evangelist. They also traveled together and were avid supporters of the National Baptist Convention and other Christian venue.

The family moved to Danville in 1983, where she became the first lady of the Greater Shiloh Baptist Church. She later accepted her calling into the ministry and was licensed to preach at the New Canaan Christian Church under the leadership of Pastor Willie Farman. She also attended Mason Temple Church of God in Christ, before uniting with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until falling ill. She did not allow her illness to stop her from serving God. While confined to a wheelchair, she continued to press forward for the Lord as she conducted the worship service and preached the Word of God at the nursing home on fourth Sundays.

Minister Ida Reed was known as a hard worker in the church and community. She was part of the Laura Lee Fellowship House where she was a dedicated servant leader. She served as treasurer of the Golden Senior Club, president and Bible study teacher of the Jolly Senior Auxiliary, program chairman of the Senior Women Auxiliary, and was a judge for the poll center. She was honored as one of Danville’s Outstanding Women of 1998.

A celebration of life will commence at noon Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at New Life Church of Faith, 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until time of service. Officiating: Pastor Lee Reed. Eulogy: Pastor Lucius Barber of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Interment: Sunset Cemetery. An additional visitation will commence from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church, 311 N. Collett St., Danville. A special Women in the Ministry Celebration will follow at 6 p.m. Sunday

Services entrusted to Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.leekandsonsfuneralhome.com.
