Sonna Sue Montgomery, 73, of Danville, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home.
Sonna was born on Nov. 27, 1939, to Chelsea and Ona Ritter Singleton in Danville.
She attended Washington Grade School for eight years, then four years at Danville High School, from where she graduated in 1958.
In 1963, she married Glen Dowers, and from this marriage she had her wonderful and only child, Rebecca Sue. Glen preceded her in death in 1966.
In 1969, she married Albert Montgomery. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Sonna also is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.
Sonna had several meaningless jobs in her younger years, but in 1969 she found the one job she loved at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System. She worked there for 31 years, retiring in June 2000. She was also a member for the AFGE Local 1969 Union. This is where she made many of her lifelong friends. Sonna sold Tupperware and Home Interiors for several years in the area.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca; son-in-law, James Swider; and her two wonderful grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, Chelsea Draper and Billy Joe Lutz.
Sonna will be cremated per her wishes. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Danville Veterans Affairs Protestant chapel. There will be a dinner following the service at the Tilton Village Garage behind the ball field. Rortvedt Funeral Services & Crematory in Tilton is assisting the family.
