Peggy Ann Hankins

DANVILLE — Peggy Ann Hankins, 83, of Danville, passed away at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville.

She was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Danville to Herman and Vera Madonna Pratt Snyder.

She married Roger Hankins on July 2, 1960, in Lafayette, Ind. He survives.

Also surviving are a son, Todd (Marti) Hankins of Fairmount; three step-grandchildren, Chad (Brandi) Van Camp, Mike (Missy) Van Camp and Tony (Britney) Van Camp; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Julianne Hankins.

Peggy was a registered twirling teacher, having taught for 50 years. Her lessons spanned multiple generations of students and were nationally recognized throughout her tenure. Among these accomplishments were placing first in the Parade Corps for 20 consecutive years at the Illinois State Fair, a first-place finish in Indianapolis 500 Twirling Contest and finishing a finalist in the Chicagoland Music Festival at Soldier’s Field. In 1998, Peggy was inducted into the Senior Illinoisan Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in baton.

Throughout this time, Peggy was involved with several groups and organizations. She was a drum majorette for the All Grade School Band for three years and drum major for the Danville High School band for four years as well as coach of the twirlers. She had been a judge for the Illinois High School Association and several talent shows and queen pageants. Peggy was also a member of the USTA–NBTA I.T.T.I Illinois Baton Council. Peggy’s daughter, Julie, had been involved with her twirling as well. Julie was also a twirling teacher and performed with Peggy on the Marty Robbins Show at the Illinois State Fair.

Perhaps one of Peggy’s proudest accomplishments was her involvement for 18 years performing stage shows at the USO in Rantoul. She received the four-star pin from the USO in 1971 for over 1,000 hours volunteer work in the field of entertainment.

Services to celebrate the life of Peggy Hankins will be private. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. Memorials in her name may be made to the Carle Development Foundation.

Please join Peggy’s family in sharing memories, photos and video of her life through her Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
