Deluxe owner succumbs to disease

Peter Petro Poulos, 71, of Danville, died at 2:55 am. Saturday, May 27, 2006, at North Logan Health Care.

A celebration of his life: 3 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2006, at Pape Memorial Home and Cremation Garden, 10 E. Williams, Danville, with the Rev. George Pyle officiating; Burial: In Greece; A family gathering and visitation: 11 a.m.-3 pm. Monday, May 29 at Pape’s.

Pete was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Corinth, Greece, to Petro and Anastacia Pietris Theodoropoulos. He attended school in Corinth during the German occupation before immigrating to the United States in 1952.

Pete had worked in Chicago as a welder and at the Walnut Room at Marshall Field’s in Chicago before coming to Danville in 1965. He had worked with the Barges family at the Deluxe Restaurant, which was founded in 1939. During that time, he started his own restaurant on East Main Street in Danville.

He, his wife, Pat, and children, Stacy and Petro, have owned and operated the restaurant since 1974 when the Bargeses retired.

Pete met Pat Henry at a restaurant while she was a buyer of clothing and accessories for Carson Pirie Scott. They were married June 22, 1968, at the Urbana courthouse, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Stacy (Jerry) DePratt and Petro (Jill) Poulos of Danville; two step-children, Robert (Carol) Blackwell of Decatur and Lori Ann Blackwell of Lake Villa; grandchildren Peter and Alexis Webb, Maranda DePratt, Austin Dickerson and Madeline Poulos; step-grandchildren Christine and Bob Blackwell III, Coy and Brady DePratt and Jeredith Wallace; two sisters, Evagelia “Angie” Soukoulos of Korinthos, Greece, and Sophia (John) Armonis of Lincolnwood; and a brother, Valilios “Bill” (Georgia) Poulos of Wheeling.

He was preceded by his parents and a brother, George in Greece in 2002. His life was centered around his family and the restaurant. He enjoyed moving to the farm and raising sheep. He was a member of Further Light Masonic Lodge 1130 and Danville Scottish Rite Bodies.
