---- — Joseph “Joe” F. Owen, 75, of Piper City and formerly of Rossville, passed away at 7:33 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Presence St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee.

Joe was born Aug. 1, 1938, in Rossville, the son of Clarence and Marjorie June (Foster) Owen.

He is survived by three sisters, Clella (Ernest) Little of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary Kirsch of Rossville and Melinda “Susie” (Terry) Hamilton of Danville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.

Joe attended schools in Rossville. He worked at the Rossville Packing Company and Stokley-Van Camp in Hoopeston as a fork lift operator. Joe enjoyed going to car shows and traveling to California, Texas, Minnesota, Georgia, Tennessee, Colorado and New Mexico, especially Santa Fe. He has been to Colorado over 20 times and enjoyed spending Christmas in the Rocky Mountains.

He also enjoyed being around people and he never met a stranger. Joe loved his nieces and nephews and enjoyed spending time with them. He was very fond of his cousin Raymond Owen who passed away two months ago.

The family would like to say a special “Thank you” to Melvin Miles for his regular visits to Piper City. Joe really looked forward to seeing you and going for car rides and eating breakfast at the truck stop.

Graveside services for Joe Owen will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Rossville Cemetery, with Ken Dugan officiating. According to his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded by the Brown-Alkire Funeral Chapel.

Memorials may be made in Joe’s name to the Hospice of Kankakee Valley, 482 Main St., Bourbonnais, IL 60914 or to Gift of Hope. The family has entrusted the Brown-Alkire Funeral Chapel to assist them in honoring Joe’s life.
