Mary Ellen Gilbert, 69, of Rossville, passed away at 10:43 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Mary was born on June 5, 1944, in Alvin, Ill., the daughter of Jesse and Frances (Pettice) Rumble.
She married Kenneth Gilbert Sr. on June 16, 1961, in Alvin. He survives.
She also is survived by two children, Kenny Gilbert Jr. of Speedway, Ind., and Kathy (Doug) Rife of Rossville; granddaughter, Marci (Damen Hillery) Rife of Rossville; sister, Helen (Phil) Meeker of Alvin; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Peggy Stahl; and a brother, Melvin Rumble.
Mary graduated from Rossville/Alvin High School in 1962. She worked as a bookkeeper for Alvin and Henning Grain Elevator until it closed. She then worked at Great Scott in Danville as a bookkeeper until she retired.
Mary was a great cook and enjoyed baking. She also enjoyed collecting lamps, gardening, flowers, mushroom hunting and watching bluebirds. Mary greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family and keeping Ken in line.
A Memorial Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Brown-Alkire Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Bethel Cemetery in Alvin, with Pastor Charlie Strange officiating. According to Mary’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded.
