Jerry Shade Jr., of Danville, passed this life at Pleasant Meadows Christian Village in Chrisman on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the age of 85, with family by his side.
Jerry was born in Plumb Tree, N.C. on May 4, 1927, to Jerry Shade Sr. and Nellie Jackson Shade.
As a teenager, Jerry joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he eventually earned the rank of corporal. He was soon deployed overseas and fought in the Korean War. While serving, he developed a passion for boxing and earned the distinguished title of Golden Glove champion.
On Dec. 9, 1947, he married his soul mate Nellie Henry Shade in Greenville, S.C. In 1955, the couple moved to Danville.
Born to this union were four children, Gerald L. (Wanda) Shade of Georgetown, Tanya J. Shade of Atlanta, Ga., Gina L. (Timothy) Reed of Georgetown and Jay Preston (Shannon) Shade of Georgetown. Jerry loved and cherished his 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Jerry continued his service to the U.S. government as a food production supervisor at the Danville VA. After serving more than 35 years, he retired from the VA in Danville.
While living in Georgetown, Jerry became active in local politics. He served as a city auxiliary police officer and also was elected alderman for the city of Georgetown, Ward 4, for a number of years.
At an early age, Jerry accepted Christ as his savior. After moving to Georgetown, Jerry became a member at First Baptist Church in Georgetown, where he served on the deacon board for several years. Jerry dedicated countless hours to the construction of the new First Baptist Church that currently stands in North Georgetown.
Jerry and Nellie were blessed with 45 years of marriage until she was called home in March of 1992.
In December of 1993, Jerry married Mae Sue Barnes of Danville. He joined Carter Metropolitan CME Church and worked diligently on various boards until his health prevented him from doing so. Jerry and Mae Sue enjoyed 19 years of marriage. She preceded him in death.
Jerry loved gardening, cooking, carpentry and being outdoors. He shared his love of those things with his children and grandchildren, who would often be seen by his side.
He always will be remembered for his giving spirit, sense of humor, magic smile and words of wisdom.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, one sister, eight brothers, a granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
Jerry was a resident of Pleasant Meadows Christian Village for 11 months and was cared for by many special people and one very special caregiver, Joanne, who gave tirelessly of her time and care and was a blessing during his final days.
A homegoing celebration will commence at noon Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Carter CME Church, 448 E. Williams St., Danville. A visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Officiating: Rev. Roland Brown. Interment: Georgetown Cemetery. A public viewing will commence from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville.
