Ramon Darrell Hughes

COVINGTON, Ind. — Ramon Darrell Hughes, 78, of Covington, Ind., passed away at 5:50 a.m. EST Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

He was born Dec. 22, 1932, in Rossville, the son of Melvin F. and Mildred E. (Turner) Hughes.

He married Marian L. Powell on Feb. 20, 1954.

Survivors include his wife, Marion; one son, Ramon Darrell Hughes II; two granddaughters, Rebecca (Randall) Orr of Covington, Sara Hughes of Indianapolis; and his three great-grandchildren, Austin, Abby and Allie Swaney, all of Covington. His brother, Larry (Phyllis) Hughes of Frankfort, Ind.; and his two sisters, Ramona Strawser of Williamsport, Ind., and Cheryl (Ed) Hunt of Sidney, Iowa, also survive him.

In addition to his parents, his brother-in-law, Raymond (Beanie) Strawser, preceded Ramon in death.

He graduated from Covington High School in 1950 and served two years in the United States Army near the end of the Korean Conflict. He became engaged in the R.D. Hughes Farms Inc., operation in the Covington area until his retirement in January 1995. He also was a DeKalb seed corn salesman for many years.

Ramon was a member of the Second Church of Christ in Danville, American Legion Post 263, the Elks Club of Covington and Indiana Farm Bureau. He also served on the FHA and the Citizens Scholarship Boards.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, his two granddaughters and his three great-grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all.

A celebration of the life of Ramon D. Hughes is scheduled for 11 a.m. EST Thursday, Nov. 10, at Sunset’s Covington Chapel, 420 Third St. in Covington, Ind. Drew Mentzer has been asked to officiate the service. Visitation for family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. EST Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the funeral home.

Per Ramon’s wishes, he will be cremated following his service on Thursday, under the direct supervision of Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home.
