Jessie Sanford Hoskins

HOOPESTON — Jessie Sanford Hoskins, 87, of Hoopeston and Potomac, passed away at 7:22 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Asta Care Center of Ford County in Paxton.

Jessie was born at 4:30 p.m. May 12, 1926, to Carrie O. (Brown) Hoskins and Truman Leander Hoskins.

He was born in Potomac, Vermilion County. He was delivered by Dr. W.S. Cossairt.

He joined the Army on the Sept. 20, 1944, and was discharged on July 22, 1946, demobilized. He served in the Philippines where he earned the following decorations: Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars and a Good Conduct Medal.

He married Christina Fern Norris, daughter of John Norris and Ethel Baker (Norris) Porter. They were married on April 9, 1949. They resided in Hoopeston most of their later years. They had no children.

He worked and retired from the “TIN CAN,” also known as American Tin Can of Hoopeston, now known as Silgan.

He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for well over 30 years. He volunteered at the Hoopeston Multi-Agency for over 10 years. He liked making and fixing things in his wood shop.

Upon failure of wife, Fern’s, health, he moved to Potomac the very day she passed, Sept. 9, 2006. He lived there until the Veterans Affairs hospital had him admitted into the nursing home care at the VA and later transferred to the Asta Care Nursing Home, formerly Ford County Nursing Home, north of Paxton.

He was quite proud that he had marked the graves of three of his siblings at Wallace Chapel, north of Potomac, but never could find the locations of the graves in the Johnsonville Cemetery, three miles west of Route 1 on west, West Newell Road, Danville.

Cremation rites have been accorded by the Wolfe-Blurton Funeral Home in Potomac. Family services will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest in Potomac Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post 428 in Potomac. The family has entrusted the Wolfe-Blurton Funeral Home in Potomac to help them honor Jessie’s life.

Condolences may be sent to the family at: www.wolfeblurtonfuneralhome.com.
