PAXTON — Wanda Irene Wienke, 87, of Paxton, formerly of Armstrong, passed away at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014, at Illinois Knights Templar Home in Paxton.
A memorial service will be held in her name at 4 p.m. July 27 at Countryside United Methodist Church, 1807 CR 1000 North, Urbana, with Pastor Al Simonson officiating.
Wanda was born July 21, 1926, in Champaign to the late Ray and Irene (Porterfield) Erb. She attended Lincoln and Sidney grade schools and Perrysville, Ind., High School. Wanda earned her bachelor’s degree from Butler University in music, one of her greatest passions in life. She then went on to earn her master’s degree from Wittenberg University, Ohio, in sacred music.
Wanda was a member of the United Methodist faith for many years and considered Sidney United Methodist Church as her home church. She also belonged to the American Guild of Organist and the Mu Phi Epsilon sorority. Wanda loved to play the organ. She played at several of the Danville area churches as well as many others, including Attica Methodist Church, St. James United Methodist Church in Danville, both Holy Family and St. Paul’s Catholic Church, and the Church of Scientology in Champaign. She also gave lessons to many children in the area and loved passing along her talents.
Wanda enjoyed the company of her cats and being outdoors. She loved living in the peace and quiet of the country. Wanda took pride in her gardening and her beautiful flowers. Wanda also liked to watch basketball. Even though being a Butler alumnus, she cheered on the Illini as her favorite basketball team.
Wanda married Richard “Dick” Wienke on June 13, 1949. He preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 2003. They will be sharing their wedding anniversary together in heaven this year.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Anne (Stanley) Alexander of Lebanon, Ohio; one granddaughter, Anna Alexander; and her close friend, Chris Elliott of Rankin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dick; and one daughter, Sarah Martens.
