---- — Maurice Gordon “Tommie” Withers of Danville passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at 6:10 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Tommie was born Jan. 18, 1948, to Robert and Ora Lee (Ellis) Withers.

Tommie served in the U.S. Army and was employed 36 years with the Danville/Vermilion County Communications Center, ending his career as the communications director.

He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Derrickson, and two grandsons, Bradlee Derrickson and Taylor Williams, all of Indianapolis; two sisters, Celester Brown and Jean Perkins, both of Danville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Michael Nelson of Aurora, Ill.

Tommie was formerly married to Thomasina Withers, and that union embraced three additional daughters, Tina Smith-Charles, Deangela (dee dee) Jackson, both of Georgetown, and Kandi Lynn Archey of Royston, Ga. Grandchildren include Bajhi Cunningham, Robert Parker, DaVon Parker, Thomasina Archey, Thomas Archey, Kenan Butler, Arron Jackson, Makayla Smith, Samantha Smith and Catherine Smith.

Tommie was known for his famous grilling skills and dedicated his life to helping others. All who knew him loved him, and he will be truly missed by all.

Tommie was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Brenda Brigham.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at New Life Church of Faith 1419 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Officiating Rev. Brenda Brown of Carter CME Church.
