Betty Edwards Lewis, 91, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the home of her son in Danville, surrounded by her family. She had been ill for the last few weeks.
Betty Ann Edwards was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Newell Township, the only daughter of Paul and Nellie Makemson Edwards.
Her family settled in Newell Township in the 1820s, including the Edwards, Makemsons, Newells, Huffmans and Lindseys. She attended Lamb School and was a graduate of Bismarck High School.
She married Alva R. Lewis on Dec. 23, 1950; they were married by the Rev. Ernest Berthold at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her husband preceded her in death on July 10, 2002, after 51 years of marriage.
A homemaker, she was the heart and center of her family. She was a communicant of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as a room mother at the church school when her children attended there.
She is survived by one son, Richard (Patricia Anderson) Lewis; and one daughter, Susan (Don) Gan, of Danville; nine grandchildren, Rhoda Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Joseph Pollard, Sarah Freeland, Luke Pollard, James Pollard, Jonathan Pollard, Nellie Gan and Isaac Gan; 17 great-grandchildren, Sierra Pollard, X’xayvier Lewis, Thomas Pollard, Samuel Pollard, Mason Pollard, Alexis Pollard, Nolin Hance, Brodie Dunavan, Kylar Pollard, Anna Freeland, Ruby Freeland, Alivia Mejia, Payton Heroux, Alleeanna Gan, Carter Gan, Jacob Watson and Dustin Mullen; and one brother, Bill Edwards of Danville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 17, at the gravesite at Sandusky Cemetery, east of Westville. Pastor Michael Heidle will officiate.
