Vera Taylor

DANVILLE — Vera Taylor passed this life at 12:45 a.m. Jan. 28, 2014, at North Logan Health Care.

Vera was born April 16, 1930, in Weakley County, near Como, Tenn.

She was preceded in death as a child by her mother, Alberta Braggs. She was reared by paternal grandparents, Walter and Carrie Cowan.

Earlene attended elementary school in Weakley and Henry County, Tenn. She joined Barrs Chapel CME Church, Como, Tenn., as a youth and remained until moving to Danville in 1950.

Earlene married Horace Edward Taylor in February of 1948. Horace preceded her in death in October of 2004.

Earlene and her husband became members of the Carter Metropolitan CME Church, where she served on the usher board.

Earlene retired from General Electric after 30 years of service. She enjoyed fishing, attending ball games, singing and was a member of a spiritual group (The Richard Crosby Singers).

Earlene left to cherish her memory a sister, Annie McCutcheon, Paris, Tenn.; two brothers, Harry D. Cowan, Cottage Grove, Tenn., and Ralph “Betty” Cowan, Paris, Tenn.; two sister-in-laws, Rebecca “Taylor” Hill, Kankakee, and Lela “Taylor” Haynes, Paris, Tenn.; three godsons, Clifford Sloan of Spring Texas and minister Steve A. Crosby and Sean A Crosby, both of Danville; a special nephew, Spurgeon Eugene Cornelius; three special friends, Zepher Crosby, Joanna Williams and their mother, Katherine Dukes; and a host of relatives and church friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; husband; a brother, Jimmy Lee Cowan; and a sister, Mary Katherine Cowan, both of Paris, Tenn.

A celebration of life will commence at noon Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Carter CME Church, 448 E. Williams St., Danville. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Officiating: the Rev. Roland Brown. Interment: Spring Hill Cemetery. Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams St., Danville, is in charge of arrangements.
