Orbry Brooks

DANVILLE — Orbry Brooks’ journey started Jan. 26, 1943. He was the sixth of 13 siblings born to Clarence Brooks Sr. and Learline (Brown) Brooks in Earle, Ark.

At an early age, Orbry accepted Christ and was baptized at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Lansing, Ark. After leaving Arkansas, he joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church after moving to Danville. He was a faithful member until his health began to fail. He served as a trustee, Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He worked wherever needed.

Orbry graduated from Dunbar High School in Earle, Ark., in 1962. He attended Arkansas AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Ark., and finished his college education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1965, and he was honorably discharged.

Orbry was united in holy matrimony to Irene (Forthenberry) in 1968. This union was blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Patricia. This union lasted for 26 years until Irene’s death in 1994.

Orbry was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Brooks Sr.; mother, Learline Brooks; and two brothers, Gennie and Clarence Brooks Jr.

Orbry was employed at General Motors Power Train Division in Tilton in 1966, where he was a supervisor until he retired in 1995.

Orbry was formerly married to Irene Cunningham.

Orbry departed his earthly life Tuesday, July 9, 2013.

Orbry leaves to treasure loving memories one son, Keith (Diana) Anglin of Danville; two daughters, Kimberly Richardson of Savannah Ga., and Patricia (Ganny) Muniru of Danville; four brothers, J.D. (Sandy) Cleves, Thomas (Glenda) Brooks, of Danville, Donny (Tonya) Brooks of Arlington, Texas, and Charles (Marian) Brooks, of Bellwood; seven sisters, Earline Jones of Chicago, Ida Mae Williams, Drucella Fuller, Arde (Fred) Van, Armzella Brooks, Lynder (William) Stinnett and a niece, Shirley Jones, like a sister, all of Bellwood; five grandchildren, Abbresha, Maya, Jacob, Brittany and Brooks; his goddaughter, Antazeeta; and god-grandchildren, Zavier and Jemil, of Danville; sister-in-law, Ellen Brooks; dear friend, Leroy Carter; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones.

A home going celebration will begin at noon Saturday, July 13, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 311 N. Collett St. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Viewing will be 1-5 p.m. Friday, July 12, at Leek & Sons Funeral Home, 304 E. Williams. Officiating: Pastor Lucius Barber. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery.
