Shirley Jean Miller

Shirley Jean Miller, 84, of Danville passed away at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at North Logan Health Care in Danville.

She was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Danville to Dale William and Philida (Robertson) Zercher.

She attended Roselawn, Edison, and Danville High School and graduated in 1946. She worked as a telephone operator at Illinois Bell until 1955. She then became a stay-at-home mom and Brownie and Girl Scout leader, while raising her three children. She worked at Walgreens Accounting until the family moved to Paris in 1971. In Paris, she was happily employed at Paragraphs gift shop for many years and truly enjoyed working there.

She married her high school sweetheart, Jack Edward Miller, on Feb. 18, 1951, at Central Christian Church in Danville. He preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1999.

After his passing, Shirley began working in the deli at County Market Towne Centre. She worked there for almost 13 years before finally retiring Dec. 31, 2012.

She was an active member of CrossRoads Christian Church and an avid poem writer. Shirley wrote many poems that she could recite and shared with her church. She loved animals of all kinds, especially horses, and the many dogs and cats that she owned. In the mid ‘90s Shirley was instrumental in helping the fire department acquire Cairn’s IRIS helmet mount with Rep. Bill Black to help firefighters see better in fires.

Surviving Shirley are one daughter, Toni (Rod) Day; one son, Michael (Tina) Miller; grandchildren, Alissa (Todd) Wright, Stacy (Day) High, Christopher (Kim) Day, Jenna and Brandt McCoskey, Brandy and Angela Miller and Autumn (Ryan) Pecchenino; one half-brother, Jerry (Nancy) Fellows; sister-in-law, Marjorie (Jim) Gilliland; many nieces, nephews; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Rupp; brother, Bill Zercher; and daughter, Melissa McCoskey.

A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at CrossRoads Christian Church with Pastor Miles Clark officiating. Memorials can be made to the Vermilion County Humane Society. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home in Danville, is in charge of arrangements.

She was a sweet and caring woman, and she was loved by all who met her. She will be greatly missed. Condolences can be left at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
