Mary A. Ray

BLOOMINGDALE, Ind. — Mary A. Ray, 88, a former resident of rural Kingman, Ind., and a five-year resident of Bloomingdale, passed away at 5:45 a.m. EDT Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Clinton Gardens in Clinton, Ind., after a short illness.

Mary was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Eagle Butte, S.D., the daughter of the late John Victor Pugh and Faye Edna (Konkler) Pugh. She was raised in Tangier, Ind., by foster parents, Bill (Mary) Catherine Graves and Guy (Margaret) Harvey.

Mary trained as a registered nurse during World War II at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Ill., while her future husband served in military operations in Germany.

After the German surrender in May of 1945, she and Paul Ray Jr. were united in marriage at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Howard, Ind., on July 15, 1945.

Mary and Paul lived on a farm in rural Kingman for 62 years when Paul preceded her in death in October 2007.

Mary is survived by five children, Paula (Bob) Brooks of Princeton, W.Va., Phyllis (Scott) Blackwood of Louisville, Ky., Alan (Debbie Capehart) Ray of Cayuga, Ind., Alice (David) Denhart of Covington, Ind., and Faith (Jim) Hanner of Bloomingdale, Ind. Mary was proud of her 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Hazelwood and Charlotte Williams; brother, Gene Pugh; and brother Glenn Pugh, who died in World War II. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Ray (Dave) Greene of Danville, Ind.

Mary was a member of Waterman Baptist Church for close to 70 years. As well as being a busy mother, she actively assisted her husband with Youth for Christ and his many itinerant ministries in local churches. She worked as an R.N. with Dr. Franklin Swaim at the former Kingman medical satellite office for many years and later at the Women’s Penitentiary near Rockville. She was an active member of the Tangier Home Economics Club, often giving the devotionals. Mary enjoyed her Tangier High School Class of 1942 reunion as well as her Lakeview Nursing Class of 1945 reunion held yearly in May.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, April 27, at Waterman Baptist Church in Lodi, Ind., with the Rev. William Lehman officiating. Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery in Lodi. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. EDT Friday, April 26, at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Ind., and one hour prior to services at the church.
