Carl Lance

Carl Lance, 79, of Westville, passed away at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana on Friday, April 4, 2014.

He was born Oct. 14, 1934, in Boonville, Ind., one of nine children born to Rob and Anna (Weyerbacher) Lance.

Affectionately referred to as “Homer,” Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country from 1957-1959. He also was a talented diesel mechanic, owning and managing Carl’s Diesel Service in Westville for 30 years. In his retirement, he especially enjoyed rebuilding tractor engines, watching NASCAR races, breakfast at his favorite restaurant and spending time with his family.

He married his great love, Virginia, June 8, 1968 in Indianapolis. She preceded him in death.

Carl leaves behind his brother, Kenny; his daughters, Cathy (Bill) Doggett, and Lisa (Scott) Kair; one very special grandson, Chris (Kassi) Doggett; three granddaughters, Billie and Jenny Doggett and Anna Kair; three great-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind many wonderful friends and fond memories of coffee meetings.

Above all, Carl loved his family and he will be sorely missed.

A visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel, Westville. A funeral service to celebrate Carl’s life will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the funeral home with Pastor James Blue officiating. Military rites will be accorded following the service at the funeral home by Westville American Legion Post 51. A burial service will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Memorial donations may be given in Carl’s name to American Cancer Society. Please join his family in sharing memories through his Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
