Gene Arthur Lewis, 83, of Danville passed from this life on Monday, March 31, 2014.
Gene was born in Cumberland City, Tenn., on March 21, 1931, to the late Ted and Judith (Davis) Lewis. He moved to Danville with his family when he was 11 years old and attended Jackson School.
Gene joined the United States Army in 1950 and served his country from 1950-1952, spending some of his time serving in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Gene began working for General Motors, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1992 after 40 years with the company.
Gene married Georgetta Mae Wright. From this union, four children were born.
Gene was an avid sports fan and could often be found spending time watching baseball and basketball on TV or listening to the game on the car radio. Gene loved working in his garden and took pride in caring for his yard. Gene took pride in the cars that he drove and could be found working on them, and it was not unusual for him to wash his car every day.
Gene was a faithful Sunday school member and supporter at Apostolic Cathedral in Danville and later became a supporter of Lighthouse World Ministries church in Champaign. Gene was baptized in the name of Jesus in 2002.
Gene leaves to cherish his memory his four children, Babette (Ivan) Leek, Cathryn Lewis-Lillard, Charlea Lewis and Maurice Lewis, all of Danville; one sister, Ruby Charlene Sanders; and one brother, Roland Lewis, both of Champaign; and a son-in-law, Larry Lillard Sr., of Danville. He also is survived by six grandchildren, Shawn Leek, Marcus Leek, Damon (Veronica) Leek, Alauna Boyd, Ashley (Damieon) Shaw and Mariah Lillard; a special granddaughter, Starla Hoskins; and three step-grandchildren, Larry (Nina) Lillard Jr., George Lillard and Qiana Lillard. He also is survived by 13 great-grandchildren. He was truly loved, and his memory will be cherished by all.
