Joseph A. Chantos, 69, of Georgetown, passed away at 7:58 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
He was born July 21, 1944, in Danville, the son of Joseph and Julia (Kochvar) Chantos.
He married Judith Gocken on April 20, 1963, in Georgetown. She preceded him in death in 2007.
Surviving him are one son, Joseph (Gretchen) Chantos of Georgetown; one daughter, Jackie (Mark) Biggs of Georgetown; three sisters, Annie Janosik of Westville, Madeline Howard of Champaign, and Helen Barton of Westville; four grandchildren, Brittany (Brock) Barrett, Alexis (Adam) Arrasmith, and Zechariah and Gabriel Chantos; three great-grandchildren, Brayden Barrett, Braxton Barrett and Sydney Arrasmith; one sister-in-law, Sue Otis of Lansing, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Andrew; and three sisters, Julie, Mary and Annie.
He worked at Hyster as a tooling engineer for over 40 years, retiring in 2007. He was an extremely avid fisherman and would go at every opportunity he had.
He also was deeply devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his church, St. Mary’s in Westville. He loved watching the Chicago Bears every Sunday. Joseph was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Danville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westville with Fr. Timothy Sauppe officiating. A visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Sunset’s Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home in Georgetown with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. Burial will take place at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in Westville.
