Ronald Lee Abernathy, 72, of Cayuga, Ind., passed away at 4:55 a.m. EDT Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at Union Hospital in Clinton, Ind.
He was born Jan. 30, 1941, in Fountain County, Ind., a son of Orville D. and Maxine E. Coffing Abernathy.
He married Judith K. Fultz on July 16, 1995, in Cayuga, Ind.
She survives, as well as a brother, Alan (Pam) Abernathy of Covington, Ind.; two daughters, Hope (Steve) Carlson of Mahomet, and Melanie (fiancé Alan Newman) Harvey of Pemberville, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Robin (John) Bryant of Eugene, Ind., and Renee (Jimmie) White of Perrysville, Ind.; grandchildren, Audrey and Ethan Carlson, Patrick Jennings and Hope Harvey; five step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ron graduated from Covington High School. He joined the Army in 1961 serving until 1967. He became a State Farm agent in 1970 for 12 years and then started driving semis. In 1983, he became an owner/operator and leased to different companies until retiring in 2008. He was a member of American Legion Post 263 and a retired member of the Cayuga Fire Department, where he was a past fire chief. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and playing euchre with family and friends.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be 3-5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 26, at the American Legion in Cayuga, Ind. According to Ron’s wishes, he will be cremated and burial will be at a later date.
