Frederick Hoyt Underhill, Sr.

Frederick Hoyt Underhill, Sr., 97, of Danville, died on Oct. 11, 2013, in Danville.

Frederick was born on Sept. 30, 1916, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Elmer Underhill and Ethel Buckingham Huber Underhill. He married Margaret Keys Underhill on Feb. 2, 1946, and had 59 wonderful years together until her death on March 1, 2005. Survivors include son, Frederick (Candice) Underhill, Jr., of Danville; daughter, Mary (Dr. James) Young, of Hartville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Gregory (Shoba) Underhill, of Champaign, Patrick (Jessica) Underhill of Schenectady, N.Y., and Christopher (Jayme) Beinlich of Cancal Winchester, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren, Janaki Rajamannar-Underhill, Sameena Rajamannar-Underhill, Brady Beinlich, and Nathan Beinlich. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were very special to him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents; three brothers, Heaton, Frank, and Jack; and three sisters, Dorothy, Janet, and Mary.

Fred was raised in New Jersey and New England. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire until interrupted by World War II. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a pilot in the South Pacific during the war. After the war, he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He operated a dairy farm in Canandaigua, N.Y., for 18 years. In 1965, Fred began a 22-year banking career in which he rose to be Senior Vice President of the First National Bank of Sycamore.

After 15 years of active retirement in Florida, Fred and Margaret moved to Danville in 2003, where he resided at Liberty Estates. Fred really enjoyed the friends that he made over the last ten years at Liberty Estates and Hawthorne Inn.

His hobbies over the years were golf, cross-country skiing, and spending time with his family. He was very active in the exercise class at Liberty Estates and Hawthorne Inn and worked his schedule around those classes. Fred was an avid reader and the Danville Public Library was wonderful in supplying him with up-to-date audio books. For the past year, the caring people at Carle Hospice have nurtured and cared for him.

Memorials can be made in Fred’s name to Carle Hospice or Danville Central Christian Church Foundation, Inc. Pape Memorial Home of Danville is in charge of arrangements. Pursuant to his wishes, Fred will be cremated. A private family celebration service will be held in the future. Guest Register: www.papemortuary.com.
