Robert (Bob) Bennett, 90 of Sidell, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the Sidell United Methodist Church in Sidell. A visitation will be held Wednesday at the church from 10-11:30 a.m. Burial will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Indianola.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 16, 1921, southeast of Sidell, a son of Franklin Odbert and Evelyn Molt Bennett. He married Betty Retzolk on Nov. 4, 1950, in Urbana. She preceded him in death in 2008. Mr. Bennett is survived by a sister, Rhea Guthrie of Danville, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Ralph and Raymond.
Mr. Bennett was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army.
He attended eight years at Barnett Grade School and graduated from Sidell High School in 1939. He participated in football and track and attended the University of Illinois for one semester. He ran the family farm for his mother until her death in 1945. He graduated from the Counter Intelligence Corps, but worked in the mess hall as a meat cutter until 1947. He worked several years until retirement as a self-employed carpenter and construction worker.
He was a member of the Sidell United Methodist Church where he served as an usher for 21 years. He was a charter member of the Sidell Historical Society and a member of the Sidell American Legion Post 530, where he served as chaplain for several years.
Memorials can be made to the Sidell United Methodist Church and/or the Sidell Historical Society.
