HARRISBURG — Mary E. Zumwalt, age 97, of Harrisburg, passed away at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Harrisburg Medical Center.

Mary was born on Jan. 23, 1917, in Danville to the late James and Nellie (Price) Edwards.

On Sept. 9, 1934, she married Arthur Zumwalt, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 1998.

Mary attended First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed reading, writing poetry and enjoyed nature.

Surviving family members include her sister, Lucille Lyman of Tilton; three children, Don (Beth) Zumwalt of Morton, David (Margo) Zumwalt of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mary Sue (Joe) Ewing of Harrisburg; 11 grandchildren, Michael Zumwalt of Chicago, Julie (Peter) Juengel of Grand Blanc, Mich., Scott (Jessica) Zumwalt of Lexington, Ky., Lisa (Stuart) Thomajin of Austin, Texas, Jenny (Kerry) Grabowski of Fort Wayne, Ind., Nancy (Tom) Bean of Fort Wayne, Ind., Laura (Rick) Baur of St. Louis, Mo., Megin (Jonah) Rice of Marion, Elizabeth Ann Zumwalt (Chris Jacob) of Austin, Texas, James Arthur Zumwalt Jr. of Shelbina, Mo., and Jamie (Don) Medlen of Rossville; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; son James Arthur Zumwalt Sr.; great-grandson Zachary Baur; sister Genevra Pruitt; sister Dorothy Berg; brother Jim Edwards; brother Robert Edwards; and brother Jacob Edwards.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. The Rev. Christine Cunningham will officiate. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Spring Hill Cemetery in Danville. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Reed Funeral Chapel.
