HALLS, Tenn. — John Irby Sammons Jr., 66, of Halls, Tenn., died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Dyersburg Regional Hospital of Dyersburg, Tenn.
John was born Nov. 28, 1947, in Murray, Ky. He is the son of the late John Irby Sammons Sr. and Paula Sue (Copland) Pierce.
He married Sharry Joe Thornton.
He was a retired coach and educator.
He is survived by his wife, Sharry Joe (Thornton) Sammons; one daughter, Kim Jordan of Newbern, Tenn.; and one son, John Thomas Sammons of Clarksville, Tenn.; his mother, Paula Sue (Copland) Pierce; stepfather, Bill Pierce; brother of one sister, Lynn Claspell of Newburg, Ind.; and one brother, Steve Sammons of Paris, Tenn. He also has four grandchildren, Kelsey Jordan, Sesiley Jo, Sebastian Sammons and Sadie Sammons.
John was a Kentucky Colonel and an avid UK and St. Louis Cardinals fan.
The funeral took place at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, at Halls First United Methodist Church, Halls, Tenn., with the Rev. Barbara Blackmon Fortune officiating. Burial was in Halls Cemetery on Monday, Feb. 17. Calling hours were from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Halls First United Methodist, Halls, Tenn.
