SIDELL — Phil Swinford, 83, of Sidell, went to be with his Lord at 9:45 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2013, at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

Phil was born Feb. 4, 1930, in Sidell to Harold and Bertha Ratcliff Swinford.

Phil married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Aileene Ware, on June 10, 1951, at the First Baptist Church in Sidell.

Aileene survives, as well as one son, John (Cari) Swinford of Williamsville; one daughter, Judy (Don) Okuley of Sidell; one brother, Joe (Peggy) Swinford of Pekin; one sister, Claudine (John) Boen of Oakwood; three grandchildren, Emily Swinford, Ellen (Nick) VanMeter and Matthew (Aubrey) Hayes; two great-grandchildren, Ian Swinford and Natalie Hayes; several nieces and nephews; special nephew Troy Ware; special great-niece, Taylor Ware; one aunt, Esther Thomas of Veedersburg, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Robbie Lynn Swinford; and two brothers-in-law, Harold (Linda) Ware of Sidell and Veit Gustin of Sidell.

He was preceded in death by his sister Nola Gustin; a brother, Dick Swinford; and an infant son, Jason David.

Phil operated the Standard Station in Homer for a time and also Sidell Radio & TV, and he retired from Hyster Corporation.

He was a member of the Faith Evangelical Church in Fairmount and a charter member of the Sidell Historical Society. He also had served on the Sidell Village Board and as president of the Fairview Cemetery Board.

Phil was an avid Cardinal fan, enjoyed reading Westerns, bird watching and gardening as well as Illini basketball.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Robison Chapel in Catlin, with his son John Swinford officiating, assisted by Pastor Steve Lamb. Burial in: Fairview Cemetery at Sidell. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday at Robison Chapel.
