Edward J. Layden Sr.

HOOPESTON — Edward J. Layden Sr., 93, of Hoopeston died at 6:55 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center.

Born May 23, 1919, in Cheneyville, he was the son of Edward and Cornelia (Fitzgerald) Layden.

He married Jean Kinsella in September of 1947 at Bloomington, Ill. She preceded him in death on May 3, 1958. He then married Eileen Green on Nov. 26, 1959, at Hoopeston. She survives.

Also surviving are eight children, Edward J. (Yvonne) Layden Jr. of Hoopeston, Tade (Sue) Layden of Normal, Ill., Mary Kay (James) Brown of Hoopeston, Margaret (Dr. Alan) Brewer of Faucett, Mo., Colleen Layden of Olathe, Kan,. Abby (Mark) Linesch of Houston, Texas, Patrick Layden of Milwaukee, Wis., and Molly (Eric) Miller of Danville; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Layden of Phoenix, Ariz.; 24 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard P. Layden of Hoopeston; three sisters, Ruth Marie Carter of Arlington, and Agnes (Dr. David) Davis and Patricia (Leonard) Newman, all of Arlington, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Paul; a sister, Marie Ellen McKean; a son, Michael; and two grandchildren.

Ed was graduated from John Greer High School in the Class of 1937. He attended the University of Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was a proud member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association.

He had served in the U.S. Army.

Ed had farmed his entire life, retiring in 2004.

He was a life-long member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he had served as a trustee and also served on the Parish Council. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He also served on the Hoopeston Area School Board from 1964-1973. He served on the DACC Board of Directors from 1976–1989, and served on the DACC Foundation Board from 1990–2000. Ed was inducted into the DACC Athletic Hall Of Fame in 2008 and was recognized as a Founder of DACC in 2011.

He enjoyed reading about history, with a particular interest of his grandfather’s participation in the Civil War.

He was an avid sports enthusiast, with a great passion for Notre Dame. He loved and cherished his family, who will dearly miss him.

Funeral services for Mr. Layden will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 13, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 423 S. 3rd St., Hoopeston. Father Patrick O’Neal will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by the Hoopeston American Legion and VFW Post at the church following services. As per his wishes, his body will be cremated and burial of his ashes will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Brown-Alkire Funeral Home, 309 E. Washington St., Hoopeston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to the Hoopeston Multi Agency, Grant Township Food Cupboard, Hoopeston Public Library or the St. Anthony Catholic Church, all in Hoopeston.
