Gordon P. Smith, 81, of Oakwood, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at his home.
He was born on Feb. 28, 1932, in Covington, Ind., to Paul J. and Dorothy E. Cornelius Smith.
He married Barbara Carrigan in 1951, and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2000.
Survivors include one son, Charles K. (Cindy) Smith of Danville; one foster son, Richard (Laura) Donaldson of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Carla K. (Cheryl Girton) Smith of Oakwood and Cuba K. (Monty) Poulson of Oakwood; one brother, Norman K. (Deloris) Smith of Georgetown; one sister, Deloris Payne of South Bend, Ind.; five grandchildren, Jabie Smith, Jacob Smith, Jason Smith, Levi (Jessica) Poulson and Lacey (Brandon) Zaayer; three foster grandchildren, Alex, Alyssa and Luke; six great-grandchildren; and one foster great-grandchild.
Gordon had been a coal miner for over 25 years and served in the United States Navy. He enjoyed tinkering outdoors and was a “Jack of all trades.” He loved being with his family and appreciated good food. He was a member of the American Legion Dornblazer Post 203 in Georgetown and United Mine Workers.
Funeral services: 10 a.m. Friday at Robison Chapel in Catlin, the Rev. Dan Ziebart will officiate. Burial in: McKendree Cemetery in Georgetown, with military honors provided by American Legion Dornblazer Post 203 in Georgetown. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Robison Chapel in Catlin.
