Susie M. Smoot

DANVILLE — Susie M. Smoot, 83, passed this life at 4:35 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Susie was born March 1, 1930, in Sand Prairie (Eugene area), Ind., to Frank and Florence Pritchard Kizer.

She married Donald P. Smoot on June 6, 1948, in Catlin, Ill. He survives.

They always felt they raised many children, but actually had four of their own: Donald E. (Jackie) Smoot of Oakwood, Ill., Ronald (Kay) Smoot, of Fairmount, Ill., Dianna (Kevin) Kirk of Catlin, Ill., and John Kevin (Teresa) of Catlin. They have 10 grandchildren: Matthew Smoot, Jed Smoot, Nathan Smoot, Seth (Laura) Smoot, Clayton Smoot, Carrie (Brock) Burton, Ashley (John) Clem, Doug Kirk, Kimberly (Garett) Pabst and Kelli (Zach) Lyons. Susie also was blessed with 15 great-grandchildren: Mason, Sebastian, Cooper and Rowan Burton, Camden, Ty and Bennett Smoot, Braxton and Fletcher Clem, Dylan and Ava Smoot, Taylor Smoot, Lennox Lyons, Tucker and Kirk Pabst. Susie is survived by two sisters, Madge (Lloyd) Ross and Virginia (Keith) Boen; two brothers, Edward (Clara) Kizer and Wayne (Betty) Kizer; and many nephews, nieces and all of their children.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Mildred, Mabel and Margaret; and a brother, Clarence.

Susie attended several Indiana schools before they moved to the Bismarck area and ended up graduating from Catlin High School.

Along her childhood path to adulthood, she gained many lifelong friends. After “retiring” from Smoot Construction Company, Inc., in 1985, Susie opened a daycare business in her home. She became affectionately known as “Grandma Susie” to many.

Susie was a “giver”, never turning down the opportunity to fix a meal, a tea or a sandwich “to go.” Her kitchen was never closed and never a stranger sat at her table. Susie looked forward to each day.

Funeral services: 2 p.m. Sunday at Catlin United Methodist Church with Matt Streeter to officiate. Burial in OakRidge Cemetery, Catlin. Visitation: 3-7 p.m. Saturday at Catlin United Methodist Church.

Memorials to the Catlin Historical Society or flowers to someone who needs something to look forward to. Robison Chapel of Catlin is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences: www.robisonchapel.com.
