Robert “Bob” Atterson Thorlton

BAY PINES, Fla. — Robert “Bob” Atterson Thorlton, 95, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Bay Pines, Fla.

Bob was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Danville to the late Robert Thorlton and Jesse Mae Thorlton.

Bob was married to Fern Haussy. He later married Michaela Theresa Barbosa.

Bob lived in Danville, Ill., until 2009 when he moved to Redington Beach, Fla. He attended Garfield School and earned his GED while in the Air Force. He attended St. Paul’s Catholic Church. He served in the Air Force as master sergeant from 1940-1947. While in Danville, he worked as a chef at the Luxor Restaurant and George’s Buffet.

Bob loved his family and loved telling stories about his experiences in the Air Force. He also was an excellent fisherman and fished as often as possible. Bob always had a wonderful vegetable garden. His neighbors and friends on Boiling Springs Road helped with it and enjoyed the many vegetables he provided. He even had a small garden growing in the sand at his beach condo in Florida. One of Bob’s great joys was discussing politics with his coffee group at McDonald’s in Danville and at the Sea Rocket in Florida. He also enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include four sons and a daughter, Robert Thorlton of Fort Myers, Fla., David Thorlton of Hollywood, Fla., Michael (Jeannie) Thorlton of Danville, Mark (Nancy) Thorlton of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dianne (Jim) Cole of Danville.

He also is survived by seven grandchildren, Sherri Dean, Terri VanNess, Natasha Genc, Alexander Thorlton, Brent (Elena Mantas) Thorlton, Collin Thorlton, Justin (Kate) Thorlton; and four step-grandchildren, Matthew (Laura) George, Andrew (Jennifer) George, Kathryn (Ted) Houpt and Rebecca George. Bob had 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, George Thorlton and William “Bill” Thorlton; and his wife, Michaela Thorlton.

There will be a private funeral service at Spring Hill Cemetery. A celebration of life reception for family and friends will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Danville Boat Club.

Memorial donations may be made to: VA Hospice, payable to VAHCS Bay Pines GPF 1086, Bay Pines VAHCS Hospice Unit, Ward 5C, P.O. Box 5005, Bay Pines, FL 33744; or to the Vermilion County Conservation District, payable to VCCD, 22296-A Henning Road, Danville, IL 61832.
