Mary R. “Mickey” (Marken) Bailey, 91, passed away on Dec. 31, 2013, at Danville Care Center.
She was born on Feb. 11, 1922, in Bethlehem, Pa., to Daniel H. and Ellen B. Flanagan.
Mickey graduated from Liberty High School and Moravian College in Bethlehem. She was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation then enlisted in the Women’s Marine Corps from 1942 until 1946.
She took a job as executive director of the Girl Scouts in Danville upon leaving the Marines in 1949. This is where she met and married Morris D. Marken. From there, she worked for JC Penney and finally the Veterans Affairs hospital in the food service department until her retirement in 1984.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Morris D. Marken; and her second husband, Thomas H. Bailey.
Mickey is survived by her children, David (Jan) Marken, Toni (the late Terry) Potter and Jodi Marken. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Donnette (Kevin) Benson, Michele (Jeff Prunkard), Nathaniel Marken; and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mary’s life will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Pastor James Blue officiating. A visitation will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery. Full military rites by the American Legion Post 210 will take place at Sunset Funeral Home directly following the service.
