He was married to Peggy Maiden Laird on Dec. 23, 1950. Peggy passed away in 2008.
He is survived by his son, Richard (Brenda) Laird; daughter, Pam (Bill) Bair; grandchildren, Anthony (Tiffany) Laird, Jeremy Laird, Sean (Susan) McBride; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Elizabeth, Jaxon Laird and Mason and Daryson McBride, Zack Martin and J.T.; one great-great- grandson, Nicholas; and his dog, Brandy, whom he loved dearly.

Gene was an avid golfer. Every Friday he and three of his friends would go golfing. It did not matter where they went just as long as they got to go. When Gene was younger, he was an excellent trumpet player and could be found playing at the Moose lodge. He also enjoyed fishing with his family; he had a camper in Gibson City where he would do the majority of his fishing.
Gene was a plumber for 42 years and was part of Local Union 293 and Local Union 157. He was very proud of the work he did.
Above all else, Gene loved his family. He will be sorely missed by anyone who was fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of Gene’s life will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, in Danville. A visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home.
