June Baird, 87, of Rossville, passed away at 8:35 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, at her home after a battle with cancer.
She was born Burneda June Kelley on March 6, 1926, the daughter of Clarance “Buck” and Bessie (Green) Kelley, the oldest of 17 children.
She married Joe Baird shortly before he was sent out to Germany during World War II, and they had two children, Carol and Greg. Joe preceded her in death on March 27, 1997.
She is survived by one son, Greg (Cathy) Baird of Henning; eight sisters, Lorraine McBeath, Vicky Kelley and Peg (Bob) Clem, all of Hoopeston, Sally Goodwin of Phoenix, Ariz., Glela Dalrymple of San Bernardino, Calif., Wanda (Carl) Thompson of Paxton, Darlene Davis and Karen (Don) Meador of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, Steve (Sharon) Kelley of Jaydon, Mo.; three grandsons, Mike Boose, Greg Baird Jr. and Bill Baird; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Boose, her parents, husband, two sisters, five brothers and several nieces and nephews.
June worked at Scranton’s in Hoopeston for several years. Later, she and her husband, Joe, traveled across the Midwest and out west building golf courses with Madox Construction. They built six or seven golf courses in the Minnesota countryside and bought a house near Rice Lake outside of Paynesville, Minn., where they lived for over 30 years. June moved back to Rossville several years ago after losing her husband.
Per June’s wishes, she will be cremated. A visitation will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Rossville United Methodist Church, 116 Maple St., Rossville. A memorial service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Rossville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Gary Milton officiating. Burial will be at Mann’s Chapel Cemetery in rural Rossville.
